Friday the 14thof June 2013 - Jogginder Sokhi , the former lodge master for a Free Mason temple in Nyeri has blamed the fire that burnt religious books in the building on arson.
Sokhi said that the suspected arsonists had crept into the building using a ladder adding that it must be people who have a skewed perception of Free Masons;
“I suspect it is someone who has been inside the building who hates us,” he said.
Sokhi said that the beliefs that Free Masons are devil worshipers are misplaced because they read many religious books including the Bible;
“Some people say we are devil worshippers but we read the Bible and other religious books too,” he said.
The caretaker of the temple, Daniel Gachanja, said he suspects who ever crept into the building had been following him around all night.
Gachanja said he spotted the fire some minutes to 5:00 a.m;
“I patrolled the compound until 4.45 am then went to sleep. I woke up at 6 am to switch off the security light when I saw thick smoke coming out of the temple,” he said.
Nyeri police Chief Zacchaeus Ng’eno said that the incident was not theft because nothing had been taken.
Police are investigating.
