JKUSO vs SONU: Do students really need JKUSO?

And so Satan said, let there be a students’ union that never cares about the students’ welfare. The 29th day of October 2013 saw comrades at JKUAT voting in their new team of leaders for various posts in the students’ governing council; JKUSO

In the past, I have been accused of throwing too many literary jabs at JKUSO and some of its egocentric leaders. That’s not true really. There’s an African saying that goes, ‘The mother that canes you many times will love you for many years.’ Despite the consolation of this saying, I must admit that the concern has forced me to take a short sabbatical from the unions that really care about its students eg SONU (who doesn’t know this) in order to evaluate the self-centered unions, more specifically, JKUSO.

SONU and JKUSO are different in so many ways. Perhaps the only similarity is that they all have the words’ O’ and ‘U’ in their acronyms. Without bias or allegiance, let me explain:

1            1. JKUSO leaders get into the union in order to get extra cash and they always have the chance to elude poverty (didn’t they sell some rooms in hall six?). SONU leaders get into the union to fight for the rights of the Nairobi Uni students.

2            2.  JKUSO leaders always agree with the JKUAT admin, even though the issue is against the students’ wish (ngonjea sasa usikie accommodation fee ni 10k, na watakubali tu, nktest). On Monday, instead of showing the students where and what to do (ie during the nationwide University students strike) I hear that they went for that bloody meeting in Assembly Hall. About this issue, I will not tell you about SONU, because you know what it did best.

3           3.  Everyone knows SONU leader, Babu Owino. But who knows Kipkalya? Do you?
