The future of Coalition for Reforms and Democracy
(CORD) is currently in jeopardy after senior Coast leaders threatened to pull
out of the coalition which is associated with former Prime Minister, Raila
Odinga. In a conversation with one of the major dailies on Friday,
Mombasa Senator, Hassan Omar, said Raila’s support in the
Coast, one of his strongest political bases, was no longer guaranteed and that there were “no more free lunches or free rides in the Coast”.

“We shall not follow you blindly. We are called the swing Counties,
but we will only swing to those who reciprocate. We are consolidating our
political constitutuency dating our political constituency and we want equal benefits
commensurate to the level of input we deliver,” Hassan said.
Omar’s assertions were echoed by Taita Taveta Governor, John
Mruttu, who said the Coast region is planning on how to be in Government and
improve the livehoods of its residents.
Mruttu said Coast residents have been in opposition for the
last 10 years and there is nothing they have gained from being in opposition
other than level of poverty increasing in the region.
